“We move to a different place, a different space and many of us arrive broken. We all have a story, a history left behind and pieces to put back together. We have differences but we share a common goal: to build a new path, and we begin to transform becoming part of something bigger. My work renders elements of memory, personal history, and cultural connection. It is a metaphorical narrative of the process of assimilating of a new culture and the intersection of mixed identities.”- Susana Rivas
Born in El Salvador, Susana Rivas emigrated to Australia as a teenager. She uses her multidisciplinary practice to explore the uncomfortable realities of modern society.
Her most recent projects render elements of personal history and cultural connection, a metaphorical narrative of her experience as a female migrant in Australia. Susana uses traditional materials, colours and symbols, to explore the intersection of mixed identities and cultural displacement.
In 2018 Susana received the Salvadorian Artist of the Year Award.
